What Leaders Do

TBA , To Be Announced
  Cost: $445.00. Facilitator: Robert Walter

Leaders have existed in all cultures throughout history. Because of its obvious importance, leadership has been a topic of great interest to historians and philosophers for thousands of years, but it was only at the start of the Twentieth Century that academic studies began. Over the last 100 years, scholars and writers have offered hundreds of definitions of “leadership.” One American scholar counted over 350 definitions of leadership! It is likely that leadership is one of the most observed yet least understood phenomena on earth.

We know leadership exists and we know it is important. We know good leadership when we see it and we know when it is lacking. We know we need leadership. But what is it? And what exactly do effective leaders do?

This course will explore the foundational issues of leadership:

  • The nature of leadership.
  • Are leaders born or made?
  • Why people follow leaders.
  • Servant leadership and how it contrasts with abusive leadership.
  • The differences between leaders and managers.

Then we will explore the five practices of exemplary leaders:

  • Leaders see the vision. They challenge the status quo, taking risks to fulfill the high calling of God.
  • Leaders share the vision. They capture the hearts of their followers with a passionate vision for the glory of God.
  • Leaders shift the vision. They build teams that will act on the vision.
  • Leaders show the vision. They validate the integrity of the vision to their constituents by personally setting the example and by planning small wins to demonstrate that the vision will work.
  • Leaders sustain the vision. They strengthen the hearts of their people by keeping the people focused on the ultimate goal, by affirming them and their contributions and by celebrating their accomplishments.
