The Apostolic Epistles #1: A Brief Exposition of 1 Timothy

Paul’s timeless message to Timothy to live and walk in truth and hold fast to God’s Word is just as vital to the body of Christ today as it was to the church in Ephesus.

Malcolm Webber

When Paul desired to restore order and spiritual health to the church in Ephesus, he sent a letter to its leader, Timothy. 1 Timothy was never meant as a church manual, but rather a personal warning of the presence of false teachers inside and outside the church.

True doctrine is not about mere academic understanding, but about correct theology embodied in holy, fruitful living. This is why it mattered so much to Paul. The absence of truth is the presence of error. The Church has been entrusted with the very truth of the Gospel – we must get it right!

The end goal of Paul’s exhortation to Timothy and the church in Ephesus is restoration to God. Paul lays a framework for the appropriate analysis of doctrine in the church, providing practical instructions to Timothy regarding on all aspects of ministry (exposing false doctrine, addressing leadership criteria and social issues, and enacting discipline). However, Paul’s instructions to Timothy to guard his walk with God were paramount.

The leader must not only faithfully nurture, direct, and protect the church, but also pay careful attention to personal godliness. A healthy church depends on healthy leaders whose ministries and personal lives equally reflect the presence and power of God!
