Tool: The Three "A-ha" Model

These are the three moments of truth for those we serve.

Malcolm Webber

The Three “A-ha” Model serves as a strategic framework for understanding the long-term impact of our training programs within the churches and communities we serve. Through this model, we can reflect on the journey of discovery and transformation that participants undergo so that we can serve them most effectively.

An “A-ha” moment is when the lights go on ‒ when someone we are working with suddenly sees something they had not previously understood. It is a “moment of truth” for them.

The Three “A-ha” Model tracks the following three revelations:

    • This is truth!
    • This works!
    • This has made a difference!

This Is Truth!
The first “A-ha” moment is a leader/participant’s initial moment of insight during a training when they realize that what they are hearing is biblical and true ‒ they connect deeply with the principles being taught. This is crucial! We celebrate this revelation. However, it is only the beginning of a process intended to foster sustainable change.

This Works!
The second “A-ha” moment occurs a little later when the leader applies what they have learned in their own context and discover that not only is it true in theory, but it actually works in their own real-world setting! This validation encourages continued application of what they have learned.

This Has Made a Difference!
The third “A-ha” moment is the most significant and occurs much later when leaders reflect on the long-term effectiveness of the changes they have made after implementing what they learned. In this paradigm shift, leaders observe substantial growth in their personal lives, their leadership abilities, the health of their churches, and the well-being of their communities. This third “A-ha” moment is our goal!

A Long-Term Vision for the Work
The Three “A-ha” Model not only underscores the importance of initial insights, but also highlights the necessity of application, perseverance and reflection in achieving lasting transformation in the leaders and churches we serve. This requires ongoing prayer, relationships, envisioning, mentoring and coaching, and long-term commitment.

We must not stop with the first “A-ha,” or even the second! We have a strategic, long-term vision for leader and church development, going beyond the immediate success of our training sessions to foster continuous growth and change. Our goal is to bring people to the third “A-ha” moment where they realize that their lives and ministries have undergone significant transformation!

This model helps us avoid simply running through trainings and ticking them off our list. Instead, we recognize that we are changing nations. We are doing a long-term work. We are building the Bride of Christ in our nations.
