A sample theological learning experience design on worship, created for our Transformational Theology course.

Malcolm Webber

This group learning design revolves around the doctrine of the deity of Jesus Christ, and can be used to build the practice of worship in the lives of disciples and leaders.

    • In your teams, read these passages: Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:23; John 1:1 with 14; 1:18; 20:28; Acts 20:28; Romans 9:5; Philippians 2:6; Colossians 1:15; 2:9; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:3, 8; 2 Peter 1:1; 1 John 5:20. Then, on the basis of these passages, create a single statement about the deity of Jesus Christ. Share your statements with the whole cohort.
    • In the cohort, study the deity of Christ.
    • Individually, spend 30 minutes in the Gospel of John, finding passages that reveal Jesus’ deity. Note these passages and your reflections about them.
    • In your teams, spend 60 minutes going over each other’s passages, sharing your reflections.
    • In the cohort, share the passages each team found and discuss them.
    • Individually, read Colossians 1:15-20 three times. Then listen to the exposition of this passage, while reading the accompanying text.
    • Now, read Colossians 1:15-20 again. Spend at least 30 minutes reading it slowly, over and over again. As you reflect on these verses, respond to Jesus. Worship Him. Speak these words to Him directly (“Jesus, You are the Image of the invisible God. You are the Firstborn of all creation …”), along with other words the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. Lift your mind and your heart to Jesus. Worship Him. Express your praise, love and worship to Him in your own words.
    • Gather in your teams and spend another 30 minutes worshipping Jesus. Be spontaneous. Sing, declare His glory, speak directly to Him, worship Him
    • In groups of three, read Psalm 104 aloud. Read it directly to Jesus: “Jesus, my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty. You wrap yourself in light as with a garment; You stretch out the heavens like a tent …”
    • Then, in the same group of three, take a walk outside. Look around you and see what Jesus has created. Talk to Him. Praise Him. “Jesus, You created all these things. You made the mountains, You made the trees, You made this leaf … [Name what you see.] You created all men to bring You glory.” Spend at least 15 minutes thanking and praising Jesus in this way.
    • In your teams, explain what Jesus meant in the following passages: John 5:17-18; 8:58-59; 10:30-33. Why were the Jews so angry with Him?
    • In your teams, share your personal experiences of victory in spiritual warfare. Jesus is the Name above all names!
    • In pairs, or with a pastoral coach, reflect on the events of your life.
      • Think about the high points as well as the sufferings. Reflect on the fact that it was Jesus who led you through all of this, and that He was with you in the midst of it all.
      • Ask your friend to speak to the issues of your life, helping you to see the hand of Jesus throughout your life.
      • Then, together, pray to Jesus with thankfulness, “Jesus, all things in my life are to Your glory. You are the One who took me through all these things. [Name the events, relationships, experiences.] You ordained that I should go through it all. And You were with me always. And in Your wisdom you have accomplished Your purposes through all these things. All of these things are to Your glory. [Name them.] All of these things are to Your glory!”
    • Individually, memorize at least six of the passages cited in #1.
