How to Build a Healthy Church

"I was amazed by the transformation!"

Over the past few years, church leaders across East Asia have been applying our Building Healthy Churches model with remarkable results. These stories reveal not only God’s provision and guidance but also the power of a practical, holistic vision for church health. Sister W’s journey is one of deep personal and ministry transformation—one that began in exhaustion and confusion and grew into joy, growth, and renewed purpose.

From Burnout to Breakthrough

Before encountering the Building Healthy Churches model, Sister W had experienced deep confusion and frustration for many years in her ministry.

Over time, I lost my love and passion for the Lord due to the challenges I was experiencing. Though I truly wanted to serve my community, I relied too much on my own standards, perspectives and legalistic tendencies.

She began to recognize that this reliance on her own strength was not only bringing her to the brink of exhaustion, it was also sapping her ministry of its power.

When she encountered our trainings on how to build a healthy church in 2020, everything changed.

The principles directly addressed my struggles – they were practical and could be implemented by anyone striving to grow as a true Christian. I was deeply moved!

As she began applying the model, a personal transformation took place. Her love for others grew noticeably, and others began to see the difference.

People started saying, “You have truly changed; you are so full of love.” I give all the glory to God! This experience reminded me of the pure and genuine faith I had when I first believed in Jesus.

The reason this was possible for Sister W was because she had experienced a fundamental shift in perspective. She began to see value in every person – to see them as God saw them, with love and compassion.

Even when I didn’t fully understand everything, I found that as long as I was willing to love God and serve others, He would open doors for me. When I devoted myself to building up others, I experienced great joy, freedom and release. It was truly a process of continuous renewal and transformation. I feel immensely blessed and in awe. I am deeply grateful that God brought me back to the simple, original heart of serving Him.

From Effort to Atmosphere

From this new posture of dependence, Sister W turned her focus to shaping culture, starting with herself.

Leaders shape culture, so during every learning session, I encouraged interactive and engaging discussions. This created an environment where everyone could continuously grow towards the goal of becoming a healthy Christian and a healthy disciple, and together become a healthy church.

Beginning with herself, she began to apply the blueprint of the healthy church – one in which every member grows in God, serves others, builds others and reaches out. She started with intentionally loving and serving her brothers and sisters in Christ, seeking to support and equip others, and practicing affirmation and encouragement.

Over time, what started as a conscious effort turned into an unconscious habit. The atmosphere became lively, passionate and sincere!

In 2023, Sister W attended a retreat where she heard another pastor share about how he and his wife often cooked meals for brothers and sisters from other churches to encourage and comfort them.

I was deeply moved by this. In response to the needs of believers from other churches, we started organizing our church co-workers to visit and care for them.

This effort connected churches across their region, strengthening fellowship and prompting them to share life together as believers. Sister W and her leaders also sought out other ways to serve one another, and shared the teachings of Building Healthy Churches with the churches they connected to.

God's love and work were evident among us, and everyone experienced tremendous growth and the freedom of the Holy Spirit!

From Tasks to People

Sister W also began to invest in relationships, cultivating a culture of love, help and support instead of trying to do it alone. Part of this had to do with the example set for her:

I was deeply impacted to learn that years ago, when Malcolm heard that a friend’s wife was sick, he paused his ministry work to go and be by her side at the hospital. He couldn’t do much; he simply prayed and quietly accompanied her in her sickness. This moved me profoundly and shattered my previous mindset of how a leader should act, helping me to shift from prioritizing ministry tasks to prioritizing people's lives.

This shift has been transformative. Whenever I see someone in need – whether they are a leader, co-worker or fellow believer – I now respond with care. We have also supported many leaders and co-workers from other churches, helping them see the blueprint and vision for building healthy churches. As a result, we have connected and grown together, becoming healthier in our faith and ministry.

Previously I had done everything alone, but now we serve together as a team, and I find great joy in it. Whenever someone faces difficulties, we reach out to one another. Everyone plays a role, and lives are continuously built up and transformed.

A Church Transformed

After more than a year, the transformation was undeniable. Every member of Sister W’s church had embraced the vision of becoming healthy Christians  ̶  growing in God, serving others, building others, and reaching out.

I was amazed by the transformation! When I wholeheartedly practiced these principles and led others to learn and apply them, the whole church changed.

Moreover, as Sister W and her team began to live out the Healthy Church model in their context, the vision for it spread rapidly. They shared it with fellow church co-workers and other believers who were eager to learn.

By God’s grace, Sister W and her church discovered that the Building Healthy Churches model wasn’t just theoretical, but life-giving and immediately applicable.

Through this journey, I have experienced profound renewal and transformation in my ministry and personal life. God has truly been at work, leading us to build a healthy church where love, growth and service thrive. I am filled with gratitude for His guidance and the blessings He has poured out on our church and beyond!
